Position: Fishery Biologist 1/2 (PCN 115254)

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 located in Yakutat, Alaska! What you will be doing:

The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division is seeking to hire a permanent seasonal Fisheries Biologist 1/2 to serve as the Yakutat Assistant Area Biologist. The successful candidate will develop a working knowledge of Yakutat commercial fisheries and be the project leader for the Situk River Adult Salmon Counting Weir, supervise two Fish and Wildlife Technicians, and is responsible for assisting for hiring and training these individuals.

This position will make independent decisions about the day-to-day work assignments within the parameters of Situk River operational plan and will assist the Area Manager in making management decisions for the Yakutat Area commercial and subsistence fisheries. The position is staffed for 8 months from April 1 through November 30. The incumbent can expect to work irregular and sometimes long hours and this position requires the flexibility to work evenings and weekends (depending on the dynamics of the fisheries).

The monthly salary listed above does not include premium pay (Standby, Hazard and Overtime Pay) that is often accrued in this position.

The Yakutat office is small with only three biologist and six technicians who work together to manage Yakutat resources jointly. This environment provides a unique opportunity to work with several ADF&G divisions at once to gain valuable experience about Alaska’s fisheries and wildlife.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is staffed in the ADF&G office in Yakutat, Alaska. Yakutat is a small community with a diverse population that has a high influx of visitors each summer. The daily work environment consists of working at a desk, in the field and assisting in other tasks as necessary. Regular work tasks include answering phones, collecting, editing and entering fish tickets and logbook information, handing personnel/payroll documents, purchasing tasks, overseeing Situk River salmon weir project, conducting foot/boat and aerial surveys and assisting the biologist by sealing bears, wolfs and other furbearers while collecting biological data and Management of Yakutat area fisheries.

  • Requires working with the public in a community of 600 or less people.
  • Requires sharing bunkhouse space and living in close quarters with other individuals.
  • Requires working with State programs and the ability to collect and record data on electronic or paper forms.
  • Requires ability to operate weir and work in cold, wet, and loud conditions.
  • Requires ability to repetitively lift fish and gear up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires operating and maintaining jet boats, ATV, and generators.

Fishery Biologist 1

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses;
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following:…
