The Job Cost Accountant is responsible for the accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of project costs for civil and infrastructure construction projects. This role, reports to the Financial Controller, partners closely with Project Managers, Operations, and Field Leadership to ensure timely cost capture, budget integrity, and reliable financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate brings strong construction accounting experience, proficient in Viewpoint Vista and HCSS Heavy Job software, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to supporting operational decision-making.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate job cost records across labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and indirect costs for active construction jobs
  • Review and reconcile job cost details to ensure proper cost coding, cost class accuracy, and alignment with project budgets
  • Monitor cost-to-complete and support forecasting efforts in coordination with Project Managers
  • Identify cost variances and trends; communicate insights and risks to project and operational leadership
  • Support monthly job cost close, including accruals, cost adjustments, and WIP reporting
  • Assist with preparation and review of project billings, including progress billings, subcontractor billings, cost commitments, and purchase orders
  • Support accurate revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP
  • Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and related financial reports
  • Ensure timely resolution of billing discrepancies and coordination with project teams
  • Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and applicable contract requirements
  • Support audits by providing job cost documentation and reconciliations
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and automated reporting tools by partnering with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Operations teams to improve cost visibility and financial discipline
  • Provide training and guidance to field and project staff on cost coding, and job cost best practices
Qualifications, Experience & Core Competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered
  • 3+ years of construction accounting or job cost accounting experience (civil, heavy highway, or infrastructure preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across the organization
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong understanding of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and construction billing practices
  • Proficiency with construction ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista or similar)
