Substation Design Engineer
Develop substation physical layouts, equipment arrangements, and detailed design packages.
Perform protection and control design for new substation construction, upgrades, and retrofit projects.
Develop one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
Prepare relay schematics and provide relay settings coordination support.
Develop control panel layouts and panel elevation drawings.
Prepare SCADA and communication system drawings and documentation.
Develop AC and DC system diagrams and perform related calculations.
Prepare equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
Prepare engineering drawings, technical documentation, and complete substation design packages.
Coordinate with electric utility clients, field crews, equipment manufacturers, and internal project teams.
Support substation construction, commissioning, startup, and field troubleshooting activities.
Assist with substation wiring, testing, equipment installation, and field implementation activities as needed.
Conduct site visits and field verification activities for existing and new substations.
Review existing substation conditions and collect field information required for engineering design.
Apply utility standards, client requirements, industry best practices, and engineering standards to project designs.
Collaborate with senior engineers and project teams on technical design and project execution.
Develop project proposals, including scopes of work and cost estimates.
Apply applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, and IEEE requirements.
Support utility communication systems, automation, and electrical engineering activities.
Troubleshoot technical and electrical system issues using applicable test equipment and industry best practices.
Follow utility construction practices and established safety requirements.
Maintain accurate engineering documentation and attention to design details.
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
Knowledge of protection and control design and physical substation layouts.
Experience with substation design for electric cooperatives and municipal utilities preferred.
Familiarity with relay schematics, AC/DC wiring, SCADA systems, communication systems, and substation equipment.
Experience using AutoCAD or similar engineering design software.
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical preferred.
Understanding of utility construction practices and safety requirements.
Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, and IEEE.
Knowledge of utility communication systems, automation, and electrical engineering principles.
Ability to work collaboratively with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary project teams.
Willingness to work in substations and support field activities, including wiring, testing, and equipment installation.
Ability to troubleshoot and solve technical problems using applicable testing equipment and best practices.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Self-driven with initiative, technical curiosity, and a strong desire to learn new technologies and engineering solutions.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25% annually.
Ability and willingness to work extended or non-standard hours when required to meet project deadlines and client needs.
Registered Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
