Job Description

REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma
- First aid/CPR certificate desired
- Must pass a DOT physical
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required

Special Education Teacher
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Building Administrator, Special Education Teacher
JOB GOAL: Assist the teacher in providing education and instruction to students
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School year only
EVALUATION: Special Education Teacher and Building Administrator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Consistent and punctual attendance
- Assist the special education teacher in helping students with disabilities
- Listen to students read, and read to students
- Help students with make-up work
- Assist in individual or group activities, games, flash cards, computers, etc.
- Assist students in interpreting and following the directions of the teacher
- Reinforce the social skills the teacher has taught
- Alert the teacher to the needs of students
- Assist the teacher in checking the progress of individuals
- Supervise lunchroom, playground, halls, classrooms, and other assigned activities
- Assist with the physical and health needs of the children
- Inventory books, materials, and equipment
- Assist when emergencies arise
- Check the bus/van before each operation for mechanical defects and notify the proper authorities in case of mechanical failure
- Follow guidelines for loading/unloading students
- Transport only authorized students
- Obey all traffic laws
- Keep to the assigned schedule
- Maintain discipline when students are on the bus/van and report undisciplined students to the proper authority
- Discharge students only at authorized stops
- Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses/vans
- Keep the assigned bus/van clean
- Report all accidents and advise about all possible safety problems
- Perform other delegated responsibilities assigned by the teacher or administrator
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Skills in organization, leadership, and human relations
- Visual and auditory skills for dealing with students
