Position: Small Plant Foreman

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assures a Lockout/Tagout program/policy for Ready Mixed is developed and implemented while assuring personnel follow safe lockout/tagout procedures.

Checks moisture content of aggregates and assures that all batches of concrete are mixed to meet job specifications. Operates plant based on production schedules to assure appropriate sequence of operations. Operates computerized control panel to weigh and batch the concrete mix ingredients.

Assists in performing preventative maintenance on equipment.

Keeps plant facilities clean and safe for efficient operation, including operating a fire hose to clean the plant, operating water valves, and controlling electrical switches in the plant.

Inspects personnel performance for quality and quantity. Documents and provides feedback on performance, as necessary.

Performs minor maintenance to vehicle—tire pressure, lube ring on mixer drum and check all fluid levels (water, fuel and oil).

Performs a daily pre and post-trip safety check on equipment and the truck to assure a safe vehicle; documents any maintenance that may be required; assures employee log sheets are maintained to meet D.O.T. criteria, if required.

Backs truck under loading hopper, starts mixer to receive concrete; follows established guidelines for truck loading.

Drives truck to designated job site for unloading. Must distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions at the job site, in traffic and throughout plant areas.

After deliveries, washes chutes into the washout bucket recovery system and return to plant reclaim area for leftover concrete disposal. Uses washout pit system for mixer rinse to prevent concrete from hardening in mixer and on truck. Sprays surfaces of truck with protective compound to prevent adhering of concrete as needed.

Assures SDS forms are maintained and up to date for accurate information and immediate review.

Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job directs and oversees the work of others assigned to the plant—drivers or yard material handlers.

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • 5 years in ready mixed concrete production with commercial truck driving experience, or related role, with at least 2 years in a leadership capacity;
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • ACI Field Testing Technician Certification – Grade 1, or ability to obtain within reasonable time frame.
  • NDOT Certified Plant Technician Certification, or ability to obtain within reasonable time frame.
  • Forklift, Loader, and Arial Life Certifications, or ability to obtain as needed.
Qualifications
  • Must have thorough knowledge of and be capable of operating all equipment and machinery used in ready mix concrete production and delivery.
  • A proven track record of increasing responsibility and results in production, maintenance, process, and quality.
  • Must have a good overall technical knowledge of plant operations, concrete materials, training, environmental compliance, equipment, and construction projects.
  • Previous work experience in quality assurance and testing is helpful.
  • An understanding of the Safety Rules & Regulation of the industry required.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Must be able to read and understand/interpret specifications, operations manuals, equipment instructions, safety rules, etc. and draft reports and communicate with management and subordinates to solve problems, provide instruction, etc.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations and apply principles of basic algebra, geometry, and shop math to calculate variables such as inventory, moisture content and preparation of daily reports.
