Job Description

Continental Tide Defense Systems, Inc. (Continental Tide) is a leading provider of engineering and industrial services to U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, and other DoD organizations.

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Pipefitter III for Norfolk, VA to support maritime ship repair and modernization projects. The ideal candidate will possess advanced proficiency in pipe fitting within a shipyard or marine industrial environment, demonstrating the ability to lay out, fabricate, install, and test complex piping systems in accordance with MILSPEC, NAVSEA standards, and technical drawings.

Experience and Skills
  • Interpret and apply detailed technical drawings, MILSPECs, NAVSEA standards, and Work Instructions to perform piping system installations and repairs.
  • Lay out, fabricate, and install piping and tubing for various systems (fluid, drain, fuel, hydraulic, air, etc.).
  • Set up, align, and operate a wide range of portable tools and hand tools used in shipboard pipe fitting.
  • Plan and execute pipe bending operations, including layout and cutting of materials to required dimensions.
  • Machine pipe ends to achieve proper joint design and fit‑up based on specifications.
  • Fabricate and install fixtures, jigs, targets, and supports to ensure alignment during welding operations.
  • Perform tack welding, brazing (qualified in multiple processes), and other joining techniques as needed.
  • Flush, clean, and pressure test piping systems and components following Technical Work Documents and Work Instructions.
  • Install and modify piping systems per TEMPALT, SHIPALT, and ORDALT directives and applicable engineering instructions.
  • Conduct systems troubleshooting to diagnose faults and recommend cost‑effective repair solutions.
  • Perform and verify mechanical alignments of piping systems and equipment.
  • Cut, shape, bend, align, and mount piping and associated fittings/components onboard ships.
  • Prefabricate assemblies in a shop environment to facilitate efficient onboard installation.
  • Follow all safety protocols and ensure work is performed to the highest quality standards.
  • Support other production or maintenance tasks as assigned to meet project goals.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and electronically with customers and supervisors using MS Office products.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to open‑air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions.
  • Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore.
  • Must wear various types of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing, eye, head, and hand protection.
  • Site visits may involve standing on a variety of surfaces and angles, bending, crouching, and climbing over obstructions (scaffolding, ladders, internal barge or boat structural components).
  • Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and night vision to inspect maritime components and identify defects.
  • May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, including sitting and/or standing.
  • May be required to operate machinery, power tools, and/or heavy equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including high heat and cold.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined or elevated areas.
Qualifications
  • 7 or more years of maritime or shipyard pipe fitting experience.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA Standard Items, MILSPECs, and shipyard work instructions.
  • Strong understanding of shipboard mechanical systems and installations.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance or meet access requirements for naval shipyards.
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the job.
  • Must pass an Audiogram & Respirator Fit Test.
  • Effective verbal and electronic communication skills with customers and supervisors.
  • Proficient with MS Office products (Word, Outlook, etc.).
