Job Details
• 38-bed Med/Surg unit in an acute care, Level 3 Trauma hospital setting,
• Patient population includes adults and possibly older teens with a wide range of diagnoses including pneumonia, UTI, dehydration, influenza, alcohol withdrawal, respiratory illness, orthopedic surgical cases (hips, knees, shoulders), general surgery (appendix, gallbladder, bowel), spinal surgery, and urology,
• Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6 on both days and nights; must be able to manage a 1:6 assignment,
• High patient turnover on day shift - discharges are typically followed by new admissions,
• RNs are required to titrate drips; common titratable drips include Heparin, with set-rate drips including Bumex and Lasix,
• Cardiac monitoring technicians available 24/7; RNs are not required to read their own telemetry strips,
• Nurse aides available at a 1:8-1:10 ratio, capable of performing accuchecks and vital signs,
• Respiratory therapy support available 24/7; RT equipment in use includes trachs, CPAP for OSA, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen (less common),
• Nursing supervisors available 24/7; day shift has two charge nurses who do not take patients, night shift has one charge nurse who does not take patients,
• Charting system:
Epic (experience required),
• 12-hour day shifts, 3x12 schedule (6:00 AM-6:30 PM),
• Weekend and holiday coverage required on an as-needed basis,
• No self-scheduling for travel RNs; blocked scheduling may be accommodated at times,
• May float to the IMCU for Med/Surg assignments,
• Low census/call cancellation is possible - there is no active on-call or standby requirement beyond this,
Job Requirements
• Active NE or Compact RN license required,
• Current certifications: BLS (AHA or ARC) and CPI,
• Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg nursing experience required,
• Experience with Epic EMR documentation required,
• Must be experienced with the shift being applied for (days vs. nights),
• Must be able to manage a 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio,
• BSN not required,
Additional Information
• Unit expectations include strong teamwork, assisting with call lights, collaborating effectively with CNAs, performing bedside shift report, and proactive patient rounding,
• Orientation consists of 1.5 shifts,
• Must reside more than 45 miles from the facility to qualify under the radius rule,
• Navy blue scrubs required,
