Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic

Location: Norfolk, NE
Hiring Rate: $22.756 per hour
Pay Differentials: CDL holders receive an additional $1/hour after 1, 3, and 5 years of continuous service.
Job Duties- Perform highly skilled and complex diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of multiple makes and models of heavy‑duty trucks, road construction and maintenance equipment, and medium and lightweight vehicles.
- Fabricate and repair equipment and parts using a variety of welding methods to adapt incompatible parts, replace unavailable parts, and repair damage.
- Calibrate various systems on heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment that distribute materials under varying road and weather conditions.
- Inspect new equipment to ensure it meets specifications and set up new equipment to ensure it is road‑ready.
- Evaluate equipment to identify adjustments needed for auxiliary attachments and operating systems.
- Install, troubleshoot, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, computer, and hydraulic system components to restore equipment to a safe operational state.
- Maintain hydraulic systems; install and monitor electrical systems; repair steering, suspension, brake and drive‑train systems; repair or overhaul diesel and/or gasoline engines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair including use of computerized diagnostic instruments, or post‑high‑school vocational or technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics.
Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Automotive/ Diesel Mechanics; experience repairing trucks or heavy equipment; welding and fabrication skills; basic computer experience; ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days through an in‑house training program (costs covered by the department).
Other: Must be able to report to work outside scheduled hours for snow and other highway emergencies.
