Job OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Mechanic II to join our Fleet Services Group in Norfolk, VA, supporting ship repair, modernization, and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects. The role involves hands‑on maintenance, installation, troubleshooting and repair of shipboard mechanical systems aboard U.S. Navy and other military vessels.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Perform operational, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of shipboard mechanical systems across multiple platforms.
- Conduct diagnostic troubleshooting and routine maintenance to identify faults and restore functionality.
- Interpret blueprints, schematics and specifications.
- Install and test shipboard mechanical systems including piping, pumps, valves, hydraulics and rotating machinery.
- Conduct system testing, calibration and support commissioning of equipment and systems.
- Apply production methods and maintenance protocols to ensure quality and performance compliance.
- Document and report maintenance activities using quality assurance records and provide technical briefs to supervisors and clients.
- Train and mentor coworkers and customers on equipment operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with engineering staff, welders, electricians and technical teams to execute multi‑discipline projects.
- Follow safety regulations using appropriate PPE and adhering to lockout/tagout and shipboard safety protocols.
- Participate in shipboard inspections, alterations, upgrades and configuration management in accordance with NAVSEA and DoD standards.
- Report directly to an on‑site supervisor or project manager and execute mechanical tasks in support of ship repair and modernization projects.
- Rigging certification.
- 3–5 years experience in rigging and shipboard maintenance & repair.
- Ability to read and understand complex Navy drawings, blueprints and sketches.
- Skilled at reading OEM type equipment technical manuals.
- Operate and troubleshoot complex systems using approved operating doctrine.
- Analyze and effect repairs using appropriate tooling and equipment.
- Familiar with constructing, maintaining, repairing and testing mechanical equipment, machinery and components.
- Identify parts for replacement and place orders as required.
- Utilize chainfalls, straps, hoists, turnbuckles and other ancillary rigging equipment.
- Work in confined spaces, at heights and in physically demanding environments.
- Authorized to work in the United States and obtain a clearance.
- Lifting capacity of 30 lbs. or more, climbing ladders and working in confined or elevated areas.
- Able to travel up to 25% of the time.
- Exposure to open‑air environments, including noisy, hot and cold conditions.
- Required to visit project sites aboard ships, rigs, onshore and offshore.
- Must wear PPE such as hearing, eye, head and hand protection as required.
- Site visits may involve standing on various surfaces and angles, bending, crouching and climbing over obstructions such as scaffolding and ladders.
- Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
- Requires sufficient visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception and night vision to inspect maritime components and systems.
- May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation.
- Requires prolonged sedentary periods including sitting and/or standing.
- May be required to operate machinery, power tools and/or heavy equipment.
- Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including high heat and cold.
- Must lift 30 lbs. or more and work in confined or elevated areas.
