Job Description
Supervise the student account collections, third‑party contracts, and billing functions and ensure all established goals are met. Collaborate with collection agencies, manage the third‑party billing process, and ensure quality control. Track receivables and related metrics. Ensure the collection of delinquent receivables in accordance with Commonwealth of Virginia code and the Department of Accounts – Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAAP) guidelines, federal law, and University policies.
Provide guidance to other University departments on collection procedures. Supervise staff and provide continued training to promote professional growth, accurate processing, and excellent customer service. Identify and implement best practices and process improvements.
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and account receivable applications.
- Working knowledge of state and federal regulations concerning delinquent accounts and collection laws.
- Working knowledge of effective collection techniques and the ability to apply those techniques to collection of accounts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
- Ability to compile complex data in a clear and concise manner.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills and ability to implement remedies as needed.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate complex material.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management skills including the ability to successfully prioritize and manage multiple tasks as well as meeting critical deadlines.
- Ability to analyze, interpret and implement federal, state and/or University regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Some knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Ability to analyze and interpret contracts.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to effectively supervise staff.

Education or TrainingNone.
Level and Type of Experience- Some supervisory experience or equivalent experience in collections or accounts receivable.
- Comprehensive experience in university or large industry financial office.
- Some experience in financial reporting.
- Some experience in transactional accounting processes and reporting.
- Considerable experience in Banner.
- Considerable knowledge of Financial Aid, Student Services, Student Accounts, and collections, or related background.
- Considerable knowledge in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Some Not‑for‑profit or government accounting experience preferred.
