Requirements
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprinting, credit and tax checks, drug testing). Continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service if applicable.
  • If born after December 31, 1959, you must certify registration with the Selective Service System or be exempt under the Selective Service Law (see http://www.sss.gov/).
  • Probation may be required: one‑year probationary, or two‑year trial period.
  • For supervisory positions, a one‑year supervisory or managerial probationary period may be required unless previously satisfied.
Qualifications

To be considered you must also meet the qualification requirements for the position based on job type, which may include education, physical qualifications, typing requirements, etc. Qualifications are assessed according to OPM General Schedule Standards.

General

Experience:

any work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position or familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the occupation.

Specialized

Experience:

experience that provides the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Education:

All academic degrees must be completed at an accredited U.S. institution or, alternatively, in foreign colleges or universities that are comparable to accredited U.S. institutions. Documentation must be provided in English or with an English translation.

30% OR MORE DISABLED VETERAN
  • Disabled veteran retired from active military service with a service‑connected disability rating of 30% or more; or
  • Disabled veteran rated by the Department of Veterans Affairs as having a compensable service‑connected disability of 30% or more.

Grade Level Restriction: You may be appointed at any grade level and for any job for which you qualify.

Trial Period: 1 year

Appointment: Hired under a time‑limited provisional appointment lasting more than 60 days in the competitive service; conversion to a permanent or career‑conditional appointment is at managerial discretion after the time‑limited period.

Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA)
  • Disabled veteran; or
  • Veteran who served on active duty during a war, campaign, or expedition for which a campaign badge is authorized; or
  • Veteran who participated in a U.S. military operation for which an Armed Forces Service Medal was awarded (including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal); or
  • Recently separated veteran (within three years of discharge or release from active duty) with honorable or general discharge.

Grade Level Restriction: Up to and including GS‑11.

Trial Period: 2 years

Appointment: Hired under an excepted service appointment; after two years of satisfactory service, conversion to a career or career‑conditional appointment in the competitive service.

If there are two or more VRA candidates and one or more is a preference eligible, veterans’ preference must be applied.
