Lead Construction Inspector

RK&K's Construction Engineering Inspection and Construction Management Division is seeking experienced Lead Construction Inspectors to join our team. This position primarily entails supervising construction inspection efforts for highway, bridge, and design-build projects. As a Lead Construction Inspector at RK&K, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our construction engineering and inspection services. • Provide expert construction management support, including inspection and monitoring of roadway and structural construction to ensure compliance with established plans, specifications, and safety regulations.
• Independently oversee and coordinate all phases of construction inspection for complex projects, which may require significant traffic control and public interaction, as well as coordination with various stakeholders.
• Effectively communicate across various platforms with project management, clients, stakeholders, the general public, and contractors.
• Lead a team of junior inspectors, offering technical supervision and guidance on work products.
• Facilitate project meetings with stakeholders to ensure clear communication and coordination.
• Collaborate with clients, state and federal agencies, and other engineering disciplines throughout construction projects.
• Engage in resolving complex problems with technical evaluations and sound solutions.
• Monitor and document contractor activities, ensuring compliance and addressing any non-compliant work elements.
• Conduct reviews of lines, grades, and dimensions using standard surveying and field engineering tools.
• Review the placement of materials and ensure testing frequencies are tracked and executed as required.
• Perform field measurements and maintain records of daily quantities of work completed.
• Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including daily reports, compliance tracking, pay quantity records, as-built plans, EEO documents, change orders, and monthly payment vouchers.
• Assist Construction Management staff with monitoring project schedules, budgets, and analysis for change orders and Notices of Intent.

• A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in construction inspection, materials, standards, and specifications associated with state highway projects and facilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
• Proficient in basic mathematical calculations, including algebra and geometry.
• Familiar with computer software including the Microsoft suite and other construction documentation software.
• Experience in overseeing junior staff to ensure project requirements are met.
• Able to work independently on small construction projects.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• High School Diploma or GED.

• VDOT Required Material Certifications (or ability to obtain within 6 months):
• VDOT Soil and Aggregate Compaction - NICET LEVEL II.
• ACI Concrete Field Level I, WACEL Concrete I, or NICET LEVEL II.
• VDOT Pavement Marking.
• VDOT Slurry Surfacing.
• VDOT Surface Treatment.
• VDOT Flagger Certification.
• VDOT GRIT (Guardrail Certification).
• VA DEQ Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection.
• VA DEQ Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification.
• Nuclear Gauge Safety Training.
• ATTSA Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control.
• 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training.

• Experience in construction inspection specifically related to roadway, asphalt, concrete, pavement markings, structures, and bridge construction methods.
• Experience with VDOT or other local public agencies is a plus.
• Proficiency in construction document management software such as Plan Grid, AWP, and SharePoint.
• Associate or Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
• Certified Construction Manager (CCM) or Certified Construction Manager in Training (CMIT) certification.
