The Assistant Safety Manager (ASM) drives department compliance in accordance with company safety policy, OSHA regulation and client safety requirements. The ASM also facilitates and documents training, conducts site inspections, identifies hazards, and implements corrective measures. The ASM fosters a culture of safety, collaborates with owners, managers, and subcontractors, and provides leadership in developing and promoting best safety practices across the company.
AdditionalResponsibilities a) Office Tasks
- Support implementation and evaluation of safety programs as directed by Corporate Safety.
- Increase safety awareness at the project level through communication and documentation.
- Ensure staff and subcontractors maintain required safety training certifications.
- Prepare spreadsheets, track data, and develop summary reports for Corporate Safety leadership.
- Coordinate PPE inventory and distribution across projects.
- Lead OSHA and client/project safety compliance with field leadership teams.
- Implement job hazard assessments and prepare reports with corrective recommendations.
- Recommend and implement accident prevention and safety improvement methods.
- Investigate safety and health hazards, documenting findings and corrective actions.
- Respond to and investigate accidents and near misses, including root cause analysis.
- Manage exposures and safety controls at projects, assisting project teams with owner, customer, GC, and subcontractor safety concerns.
- Collaborate with client safety rep, Pillar field team and other stake holders to confer on strategy for hazard mitigation.
- Complete AHA, PTP and safety related permitting to assist in balance of safety and business continuity.
- Administer and support return-to-work processes (first aid, clinic visits, modifications, and releases).
- Conduct inspections of shops, trucks, equipment, and field locations.
- Collaborate with Superintendents and Foremen to manage and improve field safety efforts.
- Maintain knowledge of Owner-Contractor Agreements, Contract Documents, and Pillar Subcontract Agreements; enforce subcontract requirements for assigned trades.
- Deliver safety training for employees and subcontractors.
- Conduct new hire orientations, recurrent training, and safety meetings (e.g., Safe Starts, toolbox talks).
- Stay current on regulatory updates and industry best practices.
- Build effective working relationships with company staff, subcontractors, GCs, and clients to support training and compliance initiatives.
- 3–5 years of experience in construction safety.
- Strong field construction background.
- CHST certification is highly desirable.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance requirements.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply regulations effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups including management, field staff, subcontractors, and GCs.
- Hands‑on approach to safety management.
- Fluency in Spanish preferred.
