The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for implementing the company’s efforts in the following areas:
Safety Management Systems, Risk Management and Loss Reductions, Safety Audits, and Safety Training.
Reports to:
Director of Corporate Safety and works closely with the Assistant Director of Corporate Safety, the Director of Field Operations, Superintendents, Project Executives and Project Managers to assure that the company’s safety policies and procedures are implemented.
- Required Education
- HS Diploma
- Preferred Education
- A degree in Safety and Health or related field is preferred.
- Required Experience
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in applying safety standards, regulations and procedures as it relates to manuals, audits, reports, checklists, etc. for a general contractor, subcontractor, or related engineering or environmental health and safety consulting firm.
- Previous experience working within the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, USACE EM385-1-1
- Safety & Health Standards, and other federal, state, local or special customer regulations that govern building construction and safety requirements.
- Required Qualifications
- Must have a current OSHA 30-hour and First Aid & CPR card.
- Highly preferred to have a current certification for one or more of the following - OSHA 510, OSHA 500.
- Highly preferred to have Competent Person Training (CPT) in fall protection, confined space, scaffolding, excavation and Silica.
- Current attendance certifications for one or more of the following - USACE EM385-1-1, USACE Quality Control Management (QCM), Maryland Sediment and Erosion Control, Asbestos Supervisor and/or Lead Supervisor.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Having one or more of the following safety and health related credentials is preferred – STSC, CHST, OHST, ASP, GSP, CSP or similar.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must have the knowledge and know the details related to construction and occupational health and safety.
- Security Clearance
- Possession of a current Secret or Top-Secret clearance is highly preferred or with the capability and good personal history required to obtain a Top-Secret clearance
- Safety Management Systems
- Serve as Safety Manager/SSHO
- Participate as a member of the Grunley Safety and Accident Prevention Committee
- Provide field observations and suggestions regarding the Corporate Safety Plan and related safety regulations
- Assist project superintendents and project managers in the development of Job Specific Safety Plans
- Develop Activity Hazard Analyses (AHA’s) based on the intended work
- Develop and/or review and provide comments to activity specific work plans and AHA’s
- Support implementation of the safety incentive and safety awards programs
- Risk Management and Loss Reduction
- Provide field observations and suggestions regarding opportunities to prevent injuries and accidents, improve safety performance, and lower insurance costs
