Position: Pet Resource Counselor (Customer Service Representative)

Overview

The City of Norfolk’s Department of General Services, Animal Care & Adoption Center is seeking a part‑time Customer Service Representative to serve as a primary point of contact for visitors of the shelter. The ideal candidate will demonstrate high levels of customer service and clerical skills.

Essential Functions
  • Serve as the first and last point of contact for the shelter, creating an inviting and educational environment for the public.
  • Answer inquiries via phone and email regarding shelter services, hours of operation, donations, trap rentals, city animal licensing, and low‑cost spay/neuter and veterinary services.
  • Handle incoming animals humanely while accurately determining breed, sex, approximate age and weight.
  • Utilize shelter management software to process stray and surrendered animals, adoptions, donations, basic accounting, and sheltering reports.
  • Collect cash and credit payments, process change, and perform daily fund reconciliation and accounting reports.
  • Operate general office equipment and maintain standard operating procedures, adoption contracts, registration cards, cage or kennel cards, and medical documentation.
  • Perform necessary paperwork such as adoption contracts, quarantine paperwork, and time slips.
  • Stand or sit for long periods; lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; four years of high school education or equivalency.
  • Six months or more of customer service experience.
  • Preferred:
    Education or experience in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Science, Animal Care or a closely related field.
Work Schedule

Hours are scheduled Saturday through Friday, 24 hours per week with potential additional flexibility for nights, holidays and weekends. Inclement weather is a requirement if the City is closed.
