Maker Studio Assistant; Library Assistant II
Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Assistant II working to support the services and programs provided in the Randi Marston Peterson Maker Studio located within the Pretlow Anchor Branch Library.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range$21.01 Hourly
Essential FunctionsEssential functions include but are not limited to:
- Front line customer service at the public desk located in the Maker Studio; assisting patrons with library inquiries concerning library and community services related to the Randi Marston Peterson Maker Studio
- Provides customer service in building as relates to all customer needs and inquiries, directing patrons to a supervisor when needed.
- Understands verbal and written instructions and is able to communicate information and directions to patrons effectively via phone or in person.
- Assists patrons with Maker Studio equipment and all essential library needs as well
- Provides resource retrieval and assistance for patrons as well as recommending materials based on patron needs.
- Assists with programs and events in the library and may be called upon for outreach efforts.
- Performs circulation duties of checking materials in and out, reserving materials requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans, collecting fines or fees, responding to correspondence.
- Assists with events by setting up displays and researching and preparing information about authors.
- Performs other assigned duties as required and requested by supervisors.
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One year of experience in library or related customer service work.
Demonstrated level of competency with regard to computer use is required.

Work Hours20 hours work week - Evenings and Weekends

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
Tuition Assistance Program- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
