Position: Assistant / Associate Professor - Acute Care Surgery

The Acute Care Surgeon is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Surgery within the Division of Acute Care Surgery. This position has responsibility for the delivery of trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care services, as well as teaching and scholarly activity consistent with an academic medical center. The faculty member will provide clinical care primarily at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Obici Hospital, with additional clinical sites added as departmental and health system needs evolve.

The Acute Care Surgeon is expected to contribute to the clinical, educational, and academic missions of the Department of Surgery and to participate in the growth and development of the regional trauma and acute care surgery program.

This position reports to the Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery and the Chair of the Department of Surgery.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care services as assigned by the Division of Acute Care Surgery.
  • Evaluate and manage patients in the emergency department, operating room, intensive care unit, and inpatient settings.
  • Perform operative and non‑operative management of acute surgical and traumatic conditions.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary trauma and surgical care teams.
  • Provide clinical coverage at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (Level I Trauma Center) and Sentara Obici Hospital (future Level III Trauma Center), with additional facilities added as departmental needs expand.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital, departmental, and regulatory standards for patient care, documentation, and quality.
Call and Service Coverage
  • Participate in the divisional call schedule to provide continuous coverage for trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care services between both clinical sites.
  • Call responsibilities are shared among Division faculty and adjusted to meet clinical service needs.
Teaching and Education
  • Provide formal and informal instruction to
    • General surgery residents
    • Medical students
    • Fellows and advanced practice providers, as applicable
  • Participate in bedside teaching, operating room instruction, and structured educational conferences.
  • Attend Department of Surgery Grand Rounds and other required educational conferences, unless otherwise approved by the Chief of the Division.
Scholarly and Academic Activity
  • Engage in scholarly activities appropriate to faculty rank and track, including clinical research, quality improvement, outcomes analysis, or educational scholarship.
  • Participate in academic conferences, presentations, and publications as appropriate.
Service, Compliance, and Program Development
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and institutional committees as assigned.
  • Support development and expansion of trauma and acute care surgery services across the health system.
  • Participate in trauma performance improvement, patient safety, and quality assurance activities.
Compliance
  • Comply with all Department of Surgery, EVMS Medical Group, Old Dominion University, and hospital policies and procedures, including
    • Timely completion of medical records and operative documentation
    • Accurate clinical coding and charge submission
    • Completion of EPIC work queues, tasks, and required clinical workflows
    • Compliance with billing, compliance, and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree
  • Completion of an ACGME‑accredited general surgery residency
  • Board‑certified or board‑eligible in General Surgery
  • Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Eligible for appointment to the faculty of Old Dominion University
