Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures; Modern Chinese
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a 1-year, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures instructional position that will begin August 10, 2026.
We seek an individual with expertise in Modern Chinese Studies, including modern Chinese cultural studies, Chinese cinema, Chinese popular culture, and related fields. Scholars of Chinese and/or Sinophone literature, film, performance, media studies, and popular culture broadly defined are welcome to apply. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a [3-3] teaching load. Expected teaching responsibilities will include, for the Fall semester Introduction to Chinese Cinema (two sections) and Introduction to Chinese Cultural Studies;
and for the Spring semester Chinese Popular Culture (two sections) and a first-year seminar on a topic of the candidate’s choosing. All courses will be at the undergraduate level.
- A Master’s degree in related field.
- Evidence of teaching competency in modern Chinese and/or Sinophone cultural studies (including film and popular cultural studies).
- The ability to develop a first-year seminar on a topic of the candidate’s choosing.
- A Ph.D. or ABD at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2026).
- Previous teaching experience.
- Evidence of teaching and mentoring practices that advance academic excellence and success of all learners/scholars.
