Secondary Special Education Teacher - Inclusion Setting

The Special Education Teacher – Inclusion Setting provides specially designed instruction and support to students with disabilities within the general education environment. The teacher collaborates with general education teachers and support staff to ensure access to grade-level curriculum while addressing individual learning needs through accommodations, modifications, and evidence-based instructional strategies. Instruction aligns with Virginia Standards of Learning and supports students’ academic, social, and behavioral development.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License with endorsement in Special Education General Curriculum K–12
  • Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming the absence of contagious tuberculosis
Key Responsibilities Instruction & Student Learning
  • Provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in an inclusion setting.
  • Modify and adapt lessons in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science to meet individual student needs.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials aligned with curriculum standards and student learning goals.
  • Deliver differentiated instruction to support diverse learning styles, abilities, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Translate lesson objectives into meaningful learning experiences that maximize instructional time.
IEP Development & Compliance
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Review student records and evaluation data to determine appropriate instructional programming and supports.
  • Ensure compliance with all special education laws, regulations, and district procedures.
Assessment & Student Progress
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth using a variety of assessment tools.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, services, and accommodations.
  • Administer standardized assessments in accordance with established procedures.
Classroom Environment & Student Support
  • Establish and maintain a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Promote positive student behavior and engagement through appropriate classroom management strategies.
  • Identify student needs and collaborate with staff to support academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and instructional programs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and support staff.
  • Participate in meetings, including IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in the district’s evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain professional competence through district-provided and self-directed professional development.
  • Participate in curriculum development and school-based initiatives.
  • Maintain required records, including inventory and instructional materials.
  • Supervise students during assigned activities within the school day, including out-of-classroom settings.
  • Perform instructional duties in classroom and/or work-based learning environments as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of special education practices, instructional strategies, and legal requirements
  • Understanding of a range of disabilities and appropriate instructional approaches
  • Knowledge of curriculum standards and ability to adapt content for diverse learners
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and build positive relationships with students and families
  • Proficiency in the use of instructional technology and data systems
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and classroom management skills
Working Conditions and

Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in a classroom and/or work-based learning environment.
  • Duties may require regular walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting.
  • Work involves exposure to normal day-to-day conditions and routine risks associated with a school environment.
Supervision & Reporting

The Special Education Teacher reports to the school principal or designee and performs duties in accordance with division policies, special education regulations, and instructional guidelines.

Position Type: Full-Time

Salary: $60,088 to $91,800 Per Year
