Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year

The Mathematics Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that develops students' mathematical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and conceptual understanding. The teacher creates opportunities for students to actively engage in mathematics through inquiry, exploration, and real-world application.

Instruction is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and emphasizes both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. The teacher fosters a learning environment that values multiple approaches to problem-solving, encourages student discourse, and supports the development of independent and collaborative learners.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in Mathematics
  • Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License
  • Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming absence of contagious tuberculosis
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Learning
  • Teach secondary mathematics courses using curriculum frameworks and instructional materials approved by the School Board.
  • Develop daily and unit lesson plans that promote student engagement and conceptual understanding.
  • Facilitate student learning through inquiry-based and discovery-oriented instructional approaches.
  • Design learning experiences that demonstrate the application of mathematics in real-world contexts, including physical, social, and business environments.
  • Encourage students to develop mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and persistence.
Instructional Strategies & Differentiation
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies, including modeling, guided practice, and independent learning.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to support diverse learning needs.
  • Encourage both independent thinking and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Integrate instructional tools such as manipulatives, models, and technology to support learning.
Technology Integration
  • Incorporate computers, graphing technologies, and other digital tools to enhance instruction and student understanding.
  • Utilize instructional technology to demonstrate mathematical concepts and support student engagement.
Assessment & Student Progress
  • Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to monitor student learning.
  • Evaluate student growth in mathematical knowledge and skills.
  • Use assessment data to inform instructional decisions and support student achievement.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress.
Classroom Environment & Student Support
  • Establish and maintain a classroom environment that promotes respect, collaboration, and positive teacher-student relationships.
  • Encourage students to value diverse approaches to problem-solving and mathematical thinking.
  • Maintain high standards of student behavior to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Identify student needs and collaborate with staff to support academic and personal growth.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and instructional practices.
  • Collaborate with school counselors, teachers, and administrators to support student success.
  • Participate in curriculum development and instructional planning initiatives.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional competence through district-provided and self-directed professional development.
  • Engage in ongoing self-reflection to evaluate and improve instructional practices.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and school programs.
  • Sponsor or support student activities such as mathematics teams or clubs.
  • Supervise students during assigned activities within the school day.
  • Participate cooperatively in the district's evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain professional standards by contributing to school initiatives and participating in professional and civic organizations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of mathematics content and curriculum
  • Strong understanding of effective instructional practices in mathematics education
  • Ability to facilitate inquiry-based and problem-solving instruction
  • Proficiency in the use of instructional technology, including graphing tools and computer applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Strong classroom management, organizational, and analytical skills
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in a classroom environment.
  • Duties require regular walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting.
  • Work involves exposure to normal day-to-day conditions and routine risks associated with a school environment.
Supervision & Reporting

The Mathematics Teacher reports to the school principal or designee and performs duties in accordance with division policies, curriculum standards, and instructional guidelines.
