Position Overview

The Spanish Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that develops students’ proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Instruction emphasizes communication skills, cultural understanding, and real-world language application. The teacher fosters an interactive learning environment that supports language acquisition and cultural awareness while aligning instruction with the Virginia Standards of Learning for World Languages.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in a target foreign language (Spanish) OR Bachelor’s degree and Passing Score on applicable PRAXIS Exam.
  • Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement(s)
  • Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming the absence of contagious tuberculosis
  • Demonstrated advanced-level proficiency in the target language based on American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages oral proficiency guidelines
Key Responsibilities Instruction & Student Learning
  • Teach Spanish courses to secondary students using curriculum frameworks and instructional materials approved by the School Board.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials aligned with World Language standards and program goals.
  • Provide instruction in oral comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing using communicative and proficiency-based instructional approaches.
  • Create learning experiences that support language acquisition through meaningful interaction and real-world application.
Instructional Strategies & Differentiation
  • Utilize a variety of teaching strategies, including modeling, guided practice, and interactive activities.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to support diverse learning needs.
  • Integrate multimedia resources, audio tools, and technology to enhance language instruction.
  • Encourage student collaboration and communication in the target language.
Cultural Competency & Global Awareness
  • Develop students’ understanding and appreciation of cultures where Spanish is spoken.
  • Incorporate cultural perspectives, practices, and products into daily instruction.
  • Encourage global awareness and cross-cultural communication skills.
Assessment & Student Progress
  • Evaluate student progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Use a variety of formative and summative assessments aligned to proficiency levels.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and performance.
Classroom & Equipment Management
  • Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and productive classroom environment.
  • Instruct students in the proper use of instructional technology and language-learning equipment.
  • Maintain classroom materials, instructional resources, and inventory records.
  • Coordinate minor maintenance and repairs of equipment as needed.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and school staff regarding student progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
  • Participate in curriculum development and instructional planning initiatives.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional competence through district-provided and self-directed professional development.
  • Supervise students during assigned activities within the school day.
  • Sponsor or support student activities such as foreign language clubs or cultural programs.
  • Participate in faculty committees, school programs, and extracurricular activities.
  • Participate cooperatively in the district’s evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain professional standards by contributing to school initiatives and participating in professional and civic organizations.
