Gifted Education Teacher

Full-time and permanent; 7.33 hours/day; 200 days/year; 10 months/year

This position will support elementary students.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education.
  • In possession of appropriate Virginia teacher licensure with endorsement in gifted education, preferred.
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience, preferably with gifted learners.
  • Willingness to pursue full endorsement in gifted education.
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Knowledge of the nature and needs of the gifted child, especially in terms of diversity.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the educational implications of giftedness in a diverse setting.
  • Familiarity with the Virginia Plan for the Gifted and Virginia regulations and laws guiding the education of the gifted.
  • Skilled in interpersonal relations and has the ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a variety of professionals in response to needs of gifted/high-ability students.
  • Ability to design and deliver workshops and in-services tailored to the needs of the staff.
  • Ability to design and demonstrate appropriate differentiated lessons.
  • Ability to design and deliver articulate, accurate, and effective oral and written communications.

Nature of position

  • Designs appropriate differentiated learning experiences for students.
  • Utilizes strategies and models appropriate for differentiating learning experiences.
  • Designs and implements appropriate experiences to address the socio-emotional needs of gifted/high-ability learners.
  • Assists with referrals, assessments, and identification of gifted students according to state guidelines, and as described in the school division's local plan.
  • Monitors progress and addresses issues/concerns; maintains accurate lists of referred, assessed, and identified students.
  • Designs and provides small group instruction to identified gifted students.
  • Assists with the design and implementation of school-wide in-services, workshops, and/or courses/training focusing on assessing the needs and abilities of gifted and potentially gifted students.
  • Assists with the design and implementation of school-wide in-services, workshops, and/or courses/training focusing on providing appropriately differentiated curriculum and instruction.
  • Assists with the dissemination of information about gifted education programs/services.
  • Is directly accountable to the principal of the assigned school(s) and the Senior Coordinator of Academic Rigor for the performance of all assigned duties.

In addition to the base salary listed below, this position is eligible for an advanced degree stipend.

Master's Degree: $3,500/year

Master's Degree + 30

Hours:

$5,400/year

Doctoral Degree: $7,800/year
