Science Teacher
The Science Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that fosters scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The teacher develops and delivers a student-centered science program aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, incorporating laboratory investigations, technology integration, and collaborative learning experiences.
This position supports student achievement by creating a safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous learning environment while encouraging curiosity and scientific exploration. The Science Teacher works collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, and families to promote student success and scientific literacy.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in a science discipline
- Eligible for or currently holding an appropriate Virginia Teaching License
- Demonstrated knowledge of the subject area(s) to be taught
- Understanding of effective instructional practices and current pedagogical approaches in science education
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with students, staff, and families
- Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, and support staff
- Tuberculin (TB) Screening confirming the absence of contagious tuberculosis
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Learning- Deliver instruction in science courses such as general science, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or oceanography, as assigned.
- Plan and implement a student-centered science program that emphasizes inquiry-based learning, discussion, and hands-on laboratory experiences.
- Incorporate laboratory investigations representing approximately 50% laboratory experience where appropriate.
- Demonstrate scientific concepts through experiments, scientific apparatus, and technology applications.
- Provide differentiated instruction through individual, small-group, and cooperative learning strategies to address diverse student needs and learning styles.
- Develop and administer a variety of assessments to evaluate student progress and mastery of course objectives.
- Instruct students in the proper use, care, and safe handling of laboratory equipment, chemicals, and biological materials.
- Maintain a safe laboratory environment and ensure appropriate storage and handling of materials.
- Monitor and maintain science equipment and supplies; report maintenance needs and request repairs as necessary.
- Maintain accurate inventory records for laboratory materials and instructional supplies.
- Establish and maintain high standards of student behavior to promote a safe and productive learning environment.
- Identify and support students with diverse learning needs in collaboration with instructional and support staff.
- Assist students in developing individual and group scientific research projects and investigations.
- Maintain ongoing communication with parents, guardians, and school counselors regarding student progress.
- Collaborate with colleagues and administrators to support instructional improvement and student success.
- Participate in curriculum development and instructional planning initiatives.
- Maintain professional competence through district-provided and self-directed professional development.
- Stay informed of current scientific research, teaching methodologies, and technological tools relevant to science education.
- Participate in faculty meetings, school committees, and school-sponsored activities.
- Support school programs such as science displays, fairs, and community engagement initiatives.
- Participate cooperatively in the district's evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Work involves regular walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting within classroom and laboratory environments
- Exposure to laboratory chemicals, gases, and scientific equipment may occur during instructional activities
- Adherence to safety protocols for laboratory instruction and classroom management
