Overview

The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation, Community Wellness/Recreation Programs is seeking a Recreation Activity Instructor to assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of music programming for youth, teens, adults, and seniors.

Norfolk's Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space has been awarded national accreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies, reinforcing our commitment to quality recreational services for Norfolk residents.

Essential Functions
  • Teaches various levels of music classes such as voice, piano, string instruments, guitar, percussion, and brass instruments.
  • Develops and organizes classes in at least two different instruments.
  • Assists with developing and implementing fee-based music classes such as voice, piano, guitar, and other string instruments.
  • Provides classroom management by scheduling, monitoring students, compiling curriculums, redirecting when needed, and providing feedback to students.
  • Markets recreation programs by distributing flyers and announcements to participants.
  • Can safely operate music equipment.
  • Must have good customer service skills.

Instructors are needed for Voice, Piano, Guitar, Percussion, Brass, and other stringed instruments.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months to one year of advanced study or training past high school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. Must have education and/or experience in music education or a closely related field. At least one year of instructional experience is preferred.

Valid Driver's License. CPR/First Aid Certification within six months of employment.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: Lakewood Dance & Music Center, 1612 Willow Wood Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509

Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m.

- 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 20 hours per week; flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and special events.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer-paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in a credit union, and employer-provided parking.
  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits as regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance, and health-plan participation vary depending on funding and authorization.
  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer-provided parking and access to a credit union.

If you were hired on or after October 5, 2010, for a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit as a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you were hired on or after January 1, 2022, for a position with the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit as a pre-tax payroll deduction.
