Definition

The assistant principal (AP) supports the principal in administering the instructional programs for an elementary school. The AP provides instructional leadership, supervises and evaluates staff, maintains school plant facilities, and serves as liaison between the school and the community. Work is reviewed for program effectiveness and efficient operation of the facility.

Supervision

Duties are performed under the general supervision of the school principal. The AP may provide general or direct supervision to professional, para-professional, and support staff.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Entry level in the school-based administrative series. Incumbents are expected to perform increasingly responsible duties with experience.

Essential Functions of the Class

  • Assist in curriculum-related and instructional activities, including program development and evaluation, supporting staff in developing instructional goals, evaluating staff, and advising on methodology and resources.
  • Coordinate and maintain a system of pupil and staff attendance.
  • Oversee operational and support services such as student transportation, field trip schedules, student activities, fire emergency procedures and drills, community use of the building(s), and building maintenance.
  • Order and distribute textbooks and supplies as directed.
  • Carry out administrative responsibilities including budget procedures, due process disciplinary procedures, and community relations.
  • Assist in preparing reports, forms, surveys, inventory, and other records.
  • Participate in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and materials, including multimedia and reference materials.
  • Assist in observing, evaluating, and training faculty and other staff.
  • Maintain communications and liaison with parents and the civic community.
  • Supervise student activities and maintain standards concerning student discipline, health, safety, and general welfare.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of modern public elementary education.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instructional techniques and current trends.
  • Ability to disaggregate and analyze data to ensure continuous school improvement.
  • Knowledge of school administrative practices and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of curriculum and methods across grade levels and subject fields.
  • Ability to coordinate instructional programs, plan and supervise others, and develop effective relationships.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in school administration with experience in teaching as related to the assignment.

License/Certification

Postgraduate Professional License with one or more elementary school subject teaching endorsements; administration and supervision endorsement required.

Physical Attributes

Work is generally confined to the school or center environment. Sufficient mobility to patrol halls, climb stairs, lift light objects, and restrain students who exhibit aggressive behavior is necessary.

Hazards

Work is generally confined to the school or center environment. Sufficient mobility and strength are required to address hazards such as stair climbing, lifting, and handling aggressive students.

Unusual Demands

Work may include evening and/or nighttime responsibilities.
