Part-Time and Temporary; 6 Hours/Day Maximum

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in speech/language pathology from an accredited institution.
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • In possession of a current license in speech pathology issued by the Virginia Board of Health Professions for Audiology and Speech Pathology.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective remediation of students with speech/language disorders including specific therapy techniques, use of adaptive communication devices, and implementation of instructional accommodations.
  • Considerable knowledge of IDEA federal regulations and Virginia state regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, school staff, and administrative personnel.
  • Ability to effectively organize and present information, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to accurately observe, assess, report, and record learning progress of students.

Nature of Position

  • Provides direct and indirect speech and language services to students with various disabilities at one or more schools.
  • Completes appropriate child find activities and speech/language evaluations to include, but not limited to 60 day screenings, assessment for students referred for suspected speech/language deficits, and the speech/language assessment component for students referred for comprehensive evaluations.
  • Develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for students with speech/language impairments.
  • Interprets and reports assessment results within designated timelines.
  • Develops and presents lessons to individual students, small groups, and large groups in special and general classrooms.
  • Implements techniques to facilitate language and remediate speech difficulties.
  • Demonstrates classroom management techniques with groups and individual students.
  • Works cooperatively with other professional staff members who are involved in the educational programming of students with speech/language impairments.
  • Interprets the characteristics of students with speech/language impairments to the faculty and staff.
  • Maintains a clear, concise, and timely record keeping system.
  • Provides a positive educational environment for students.
  • Collects data, documenting the speech/language/educational progress of students.
  • Serves as a resource to the Special Education Committee.
  • Develops individualized behavioral plans.
  • Prepares instructional materials for student use.
  • Prepares classroom displays.
  • Supervises students in the classroom, general school building, and community.
  • Work is performed in a school environment and is subject to deadlines and frequent interruptions. The employee must respond to multiple demands of a large number of students with unique and individual needs.
