The City of Norfolk’s Department of Libraries is currently seeking a full-time Library Associate I that will assist with the daily operations of the library. Provides customer service to patrons, developing and delivering age-appropriate programs and readers’ advisory. Is responsible for planning and conducting early literacy and other educational programs for youth, teens and families. Maintains the juvenile and YA book collections, Kid Zones and Plays capes at the library branch.

Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $47,262.29

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts Early Literacy programs such as:
    Babygarten, Kinder STEM, Storytime
  • Plans and promotes programs for youth and families
  • Plans and conducts YOUmedia programs for tweens/teens
  • Provides outreach to schools, daycares and other local organizations
  • Maintains and monitors Kid Zone in the library branch
  • Provides excellent customer service; assists library patrons with reader’s advisory
  • Assists in building and maintaining the library’s juvenile and YA collections
  • Conducts tours of the library including school tours and field trips
  • Provides regular coverage of Public Service desks
  • Provides technological assistance to the public with computers, copier, and scanner
  • Prepares book displays
  • Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports
  • Participates in committees and attend training related to the job
  • Helps supervise part-time employees and volunteers
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products and electronic library applications such as Libby and Hoopla
  • Ability to lead and work in a team setting
  • Ability to communicate effective verbally and in writing

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

One year of experience in library or related services.

Experience working with children in a library setting and supervisory experience are preferred.

  • Valid Driver's license

Work Hours:

40 hours/week; evenings and weekends required
