Old Dominion University is seeking an experienced capital construction leader to serve as Assistant Director for Capital Construction
, also fulfilling the role of University Architect
. This senior leadership position is responsible for overseeing the design and delivery of major capital projects across campus while stewarding and advancing ODU’s architectural standards, campus identity, and long-term facilities vision.
Reporting within Facilities Management, this role leads the unit responsible for capital construction delivery and special inspection services, supervising a team of project managers and inspectors while partnering closely with Planning, Budget & Finance, and other campus stakeholders. Go Monarchs!
Key Responsibilities- Lead all Capital Design and Construction activities for the University, including large-scale, complex projects ranging from $25M–$100M
- Serve as the University Architect
, upholding and evolving campus design standards and architectural guidelines - Provide strategic oversight of project planning, procurement, budgeting, contract administration, and construction execution
- Supervise and mentor project managers and inspectors, fostering a unified, high-performing team
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, engineering standards (NEC, ASHRAE, etc.), and state requirements
- Collaborate proactively with internal stakeholders, external designers, engineers, contractors, and state agencies
- Provide technical expertise and leadership on engineering systems, infrastructure, and building performance
- Support energy savings initiatives, sustainability goals, and resilient campus development
- Partner closely with Planning and Budget & Finance to align capital priorities with institutional goals
- Registered Architect (RA) licensed in Virginia or licensed in another state with the ability to obtain Virginia licensure within 6 months
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution
- Significant experience leading the design and construction of large, complex institutional facilities
- Strong knowledge of procurement practices, professional services contracts, and construction contracts
- Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary teams and multiple concurrent projects
- Ability to read, interpret, and evaluate architectural and engineering drawings and specifications
- Excellent communication skills with designers, engineers, contractors, and campus stakeholders
- Experience working within public higher education environments
- Familiarity with Virginia state capital processes and the Virginia Department of Engineering & Buildings (DEB)
- Experience with building mechanical, electrical, and utility systems
- Exposure to energy savings performance projects
- Proficiency with CAD and project management software
- Knowledge of stormwater and floodplain management requirements
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- PMP certification
- Completion of a Statement of Personal Economic Interest (per Code of Virginia)
- Position designated as sensitive
; fingerprint-based criminal history check required - Facilities Management staff are considered essential personnel and may be required to work during university closings
