Position: Senior Engineering Technician - NORFOLK (1887)
Position Overview

The Senior Engineering Technician provides advanced technical support to Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) in sustaining and improving the readiness, maintenance execution, and modernization of U.S. Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carriers (CVNs). This position supports CNAF CVN Maintenance, Material, and Readiness operations by delivering hands-on engineering technician expertise across ship systems, maintenance planning, configuration data, readiness assessments, and ship availability execution.

The role focuses on technical analysis, documentation, coordination, and execution support, enabling data-driven readiness decisions while ensuring compliance with Navy engineering, maintenance, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Provide senior-level engineering technician support for aircraft carrier systems across hull, mechanical, electrical, electronic, and auxiliary systems.

  • Assist engineering teams with system status evaluations, material condition assessments, and technical data reviews supporting CVN readiness and availability planning.

  • Support feasibility studies, system assessments, and ship system configuration verification efforts under CNAF direction.

  • Assist with the preparation and review of Ship Change Documents (SCDs), Ship Alterations (S/As), and related technical documentation.

Maintenance & Availability Support

  • Support maintenance planning and execution activities for CVN availabilities, including modernization, depot, intermediate, and organizational-level maintenance.

  • Assist in the development and update of Life Cycle Maintenance Plans (LCMPs), Availability Work Packages (AWPs), and maintenance histories.

  • Provide technical input for man-day estimates, production planning documents, and ship availability schedules.

  • Support Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) and inactivation availability planning and execution activities as tasked.

Readiness Operations Support

  • Assist CNAF Readiness Operations Center (ROC) activities by collecting, validating, and analyzing technical readiness data impacting mission capability.

  • Support readiness assessments related to HM&E systems, combat systems interfaces, logistics readiness, and habitability/livability systems.

  • Assist in identifying technical risks, material deficiencies, and readiness trends affecting aircraft carrier mission execution.

Configuration & Data Management

  • Support configuration data management efforts by assisting in the verification, maintenance, and reconciliation of shipboard configuration records.

  • Assist with updates to Life Cycle Resource Systems (LCRS), maintenance databases, and configuration management tools in support of readiness and modernization.

  • Participate in ship checks, system validations, and database reconciliation efforts.

Logistics & Integrated Support

  • Provide technical support to Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) activities, including equipment validation, technical documentation reviews, and logistics data accuracy.

  • Assist with coordination between ship’s force, planning yards, maintenance activities, and CNAF stakeholders to resolve technical and material issues.

  • Support the preparation of technical reports, engineering graphics, and readiness documentation for CNAF leadership and CVN Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all technical support activities comply with Navy instructions, engineering standards, and safety requirements.

  • Adhere to contract limitations regarding nuclear propulsion systems, radiation areas, and restricted diagnostics per NAVSEA Instruction C9210.4.

  • Support damage control, fire safety, and industrial safety initiatives as they relate to engineering and maintenance execution.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the ship’s engineering field.

    • At least two (2) years of general, non-professional experience in naval architecture, marine engineering, or electrical/electronic engineering.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting shipboard engineering, maintenance, modernization, or availability execution for U.S. Navy surface combatants or aircraft carriers.
