Colonna’s Shipyard, and its divisions, is seeking new and engaged talent to join our Summer 2026 College Internship Program in Norfolk, VA.
Interns will have the opportunity to work up to 40 hours a week for a limited duration (expected to last up to 10 consecutive weeks during the summer months) on a variety of assignments.
Interns work with various production, technical, and service/support teams to gain practical experience through observation, analysis, and critiques of Shipyard and Industrial Fabrication operations and may complete independent projects relative to their field of study.

In close collaboration with their designated mentors, each Intern will actively engage with our team of professionals to learn and contribute to the overall operation of the assigned department, gaining hands‑on experience and understanding of business operations.
- Work independently and within diverse teams to complete assigned responsibilities.
- Gain exposure to and understand the complexity of shipyard/industrial fabrication operations of both government and various commercial projects.
- Interact with team members within our company such as program management team members (ship superintendents, project managers, program managers, etc.), craft managers, craft supervisors, safety/chemist employees and other customers.
- Contribute to substantial work that will be beneficial to your academic and future professional careers.
- Assist leadership with managing shipyard operations regarding safe ship repair and heavy industrial fabrication including timely installation, modification, and repair of complex equipment and systems.
- Conduct ship checks and partner in quality audits, attend meetings, read and interpret detailed work items, drawings, and customer requirements.
- Gather and interpret data for reports and analyses. Verify source material for authenticity purposes.
- Review contracts and contract requirements to minimize legal and financial risk to the company.
- Help analyze potential risks, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and internal company policies.
- Provide support in preparing reports, documentation, and analyses to present to higher level department personnel.
- Obtain documentation and other data needed to help develop procedures for future projects and analyses.
- Working with the Docking Department on calculating dock plans and reviewing drawings.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be currently enrolled in a certified degree program and a student in good standing at a four‑year university, community college, or trade school.
- Preferred degree programs include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
- May also consider recent graduates.
- Ability to fluently read and write English, accurately perform intermediate mathematical functions, and use all on‑site management software.
- Must have proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Must have the ability to work as part of a team and have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Must be detail oriented, with excellent administrative/organizational abilities with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Must have regular, reliable attendance.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the maritime industry, regulations, programs, policies, and practices is preferred.
- Experience or coursework in Computer‑Aided Design.
- Experience or coursework in shipboard design or project management.
- Experience or coursework in practical application of engineering principles.
- Experience or coursework in program development or community engagement.
Some production‑based intern positions will require the ability to physically access a wide variety of Shipyard or Industrial Fabrication work sites, including those aboard ships under various stages of repair, and active machining and fabrication shops. Physical requirements include:
