PAYROLL PROCESSOR
The primary objective of this position is to perform the full range of payroll processing activities to include calculation, preparation, processing and reconciliation in an accurate and timely manner of the semi-monthly payroll and other special payrolls as needed for Old Dominion University employees to include faculty, faculty administrators, graduate assistants, classified, student and wage employees following University policy and procedures, Commonwealth of Virginia policies, Federal and State tax laws, garnishment laws and other governing bodies as required.
Responsibilities- Calculate, prepare, process and reconcile payroll for all employee classes.
- Ensure compliance with University policy, Commonwealth of Virginia policies, Federal and State tax laws, garnishment regulations and other governing bodies.
- Perform complex mathematical computations and consistently verify payroll amounts.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and provide timely reports.
- Communicate effectively with employees and other stakeholders.
- Work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of payroll policies, procedures and processing.
- Working knowledge of payroll tax regulations, wage‑hour regulations, state and federal tax and garnishment laws.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Proficient with data processing systems and data entry on mainframe computers and PC software applications.
- Strong mathematical skills and ability to use calculators and computer keyboards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Customer‑service oriented when working with the public.
- Moderate accounting and/or bookkeeping skills.
- No formal education or training required; preferred experience includes:
- Experience working with or processing full payrolls in automated systems.
- Experience with payroll, payroll taxes and Federal and State tax laws.
- BANNER training preferred.
- Overtime may be required during peak periods.
- Position is designated as sensitive and requires a fingerprint‑based criminal history check of the final candidate.
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
