Overview

The Judicial Branch seeks an Assistant Probation Officer to assist in supervising and monitoring offenders at high risk to reoffend, including activities related to recreation, home, educational, treatment, and community programs. Responsibilities may include conducting interviews for investigative reports, performing curfew checks, drug testing, assessments, and assisting offenders in retaining employment under the direct supervision of the Chief Probation Officer or designee.

The office’s core hours are Monday–Friday daytime. Some non-traditional hours may be required as part of our 24/7 commitment to community safety.

Salary and Benefits
  • Starting Salary: $42,863.87 annually (Hiring Rate).
  • Immediate growth:
    Earn a 2.5% pay increase after successfully completing probation when starting at the Hiring Rate.
  • Starting rate flexibility:
    Higher starting pay may be considered based on education and experience, subject to final management approval.
  • Future increases:
    Annual cost-of-living adjustments (applied on July
    1) are subject to State Legislature approval.

Responsibilities
  • Meet with probationers through home visits and office meetings; monitor and document progress.
  • Assist in monitoring offenders through electronic/GPS monitoring to ensure compliance with court regulations.
  • Assist with pre-sentence investigations and evaluations of candidates for probation.
  • Prepare, update, and submit reports and databases including progress updates, court appearance paperwork, home-visit logs, and location reports.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Education:

      Associate degree or 63 semester hours from a four-year college in a related field; or 2 years of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties. All educational credits must be from an accredited institution approved by the U.S. Dept. of Education.
    • Knowledge:
      Basic principles, practices, and procedures of probation services; federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures; rules, regulations, and procedures of the department; probation techniques and procedures; report writing; interviewing techniques; tracking technologies.
    • Skills:

      Making home visits; interviewing probationers; tracking probationers’ location(s); applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations; preparing activity reports and updating databases; operating computers and software; using communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, the public, and others to exchange information and receive work direction.
    • Physical Requirements:

      Light Work; some travel may be required; ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently; sedentary work considerations apply.
