Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health invites applications for the position of Mental Health Technician
. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is a leading community partner providing acute, residential, and Partial Hospitalization treatment for children and teens exhibiting behavioral and/or mental health concerns. The hospital is dedicated to providing high quality care to children, adolescents and their families. The facility is an 82-bed hospital accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia DBHDS.
This position is for 11:00 pm to 7:30 am.
Position Scope:
The Mental Health Technician serves as a role model for patients/residents to observe and help them learn socially effective values, attitudes and behaviors. Ensures the environment remains safe and positive. Contributes to formulation, implementation and revision of the patients/resident individual treatment plan through regular communication with the multidisciplinary treatment team. Promotes cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development to equip patients/residents with knowledge and skills to achieve treatment goals.
POSITION DUTIES/SCOPE OF WORK:
- Read and interpret treatment plans for patients/residents and develop appropriate strategies to help them learn acceptable behaviors
- Develop and facilitate group sessions for the implementation of skill acquisition and behavior reduction plans aligned with individual treatment goals
- Observe, collect, and record patient/resident behaviors, write progress notes, and communicate with the treatment team to identify and attain prescribed goals
- Assist with behavior management and crisis intervention by creating learning opportunities and using appropriate techniques to redirect behavior
- Enhance communication among staff using shift reports, team logs, and staff meetings
- Assist with facility staffing needs by working with various populations to support continuity of care across residential, acute, or PHP settings
- Conduct ongoing rounding to assess and monitor patients/residents per doctor’s orders and milieu to prevent or respond to potential crises
- Ensure consistent service delivery by treating patients/residents, families, and co-workers with respect and maintaining appropriate boundaries
REQUIRED
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s degree in Human Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences, or related field
- In lieu of a degree, 2+ years of experience working directly with children in a therapeutic setting OR QMHP-C certification with no experience
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to de-escalate situations with patients
- Strong written and verbal skills
- Ability to maintain strong interpersonal relationships
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Working knowledge of behavior management
- Broad knowledge of common mental health diagnoses (e.g., Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis, ADHD, Bipolar, Suicide, and others)
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences, or related field
- QMHP-C certification
- 4+ years of child and adolescent inpatient (residential or acute) psychiatry

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The position requires the ability to stand, squat, kneel, sit, and lie on the floor for long periods. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to read, write, speak, and listen. Must be 21 years old or older.
