ResponsibilitiesTo provide advanced engineering support to the University s network environment, ensuring reliable, secure, and robust network communication systems. Support includes planning, designing, and implementing network automation and orchestration solutions to assure the streamlined operation of wired, cloud, and wireless network communications systems (routing, switching and data center technologies).
- Assist with network design, administration, operations and centralized network management platforms.
- Build, test, validate, and integrate software solutions with existing network infrastructure systems.
- Collaborate with vendors and co-workers; manage time effectively.
- Work with new leading edge technology with minimal assistance and prior knowledge.
- Provide technical and project leadership to other staff members; work independently with minimal supervision.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Considerable knowledge of network design, administration, operations and centralized network management platforms.
- Considerable knowledge of building, testing, validating and integrating software solutions with existing network infrastructure systems.
- Basic knowledge of data communication concepts, topologies, protocols, routing and switching technologies.
- Considerable knowledge of multi-vendor cloud technologies.
- Effective communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to interact with vendors and co-workers.
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage time.
- Demonstrated ability to work with new leading edge technology with minimal assistance and prior knowledge.

- In most cases these knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired through the completion of a bachelor s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

- Working experience with network automation and orchestration frameworks.
- Considerable experience with multi-vendor cloud technologies.
- Considerable experience with building, testing, validating and integrating software solutions with existing network infrastructure systems.
- Considerable experience with routing, switching, and data center networking technologies.
Additional Considerations
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certifications or equivalent knowledge.
- Working knowledge of scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Bash, or Power Shell.
- Some experience with network automation platforms such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible.
- Familiarity with Public Cloud Networking concepts and configuration.
This position is based in Norfolk, VA with a one day a week on campus requirement. This position is on-call, so it will require the ability to get to campus as needed.
Computer equipment will be supplied; high speed internet is the responsibility of the employee.
The equipment provided to staff with approved telework agreements enables them to deliver vital services to University faculty, staff, and students from remote locations. Many of our operations can and should continue as usual, even when the main physical campus is closed. Therefore, all Division of Transformation & Technology employees with an approved telework agreement are generally expected to work during official University closures.
