Computer Aided Design (CAD) in Critical Shipbuilding, Defense, and Industrial Projects | Norfolk, VA

We are seeking a skilled CAD Designer / Detailer with experience in the metal fabrication industry to support our production team. This role is responsible for creating accurate shop drawings, layouts, and fabrication-ready designs that support welding, cutting, machining, and assembly operations. The ideal candidate understands how drawings translate to the shop floor and works closely with project managers, engineers, and fabricators to ensure designs are accurate, buildable, and efficient.

Position Summary

As an CAD technician, you’ll set up, program, and be responsible for creating accurate shop drawings, layouts, and fabrication-ready designs that support welding, cutting, machining, and assembly operations that meet contract requirements and tight tolerances, including NAVSEA, MIL-SPEC, shipyard, and high-spec industrial standards.

This role demands technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot and adapt in a production environment where quality, safety, and deadlines matter.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create and modify 2D and 3D CAD drawings for fabricated metal components and assemblies
  • Produce shop-ready fabrication drawings, including dimensions, weld symbols, tolerances, and material specifications
  • Develop cut lists, BOMs, and layout drawings as required
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, welders, and fabricators to ensure accuracy and feasibility
  • Review and interpret customer drawings, specifications, and scope of work
  • Revise drawings based on field changes, RFI responses, or fabrication feedback
  • Maintain organized drawing files and revision control
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying design efficiencies and fabrication improvements
Required Skills & Experience
  • College or formal training in drafting, engineering, or a related field preferred (not required)
  • Minimum of 2 years experience reading and creating technical drawings
  • Proficiency in Solid Works software
  • Proficiency in Tru Tops Boost or similar CNC machine software
  • Experience using CAD software (AutoCAD required; Solid Works, Inventor, or similar preferred)
  • Metal fabrication experience (structural steel, plate work, piping, or similar)
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering and fabrication drawings
  • Strong understanding of welding symbols, material types, and fabrication methods
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and meet project deadlines
