Purpose:

As a Hot Work Coordinator, you will be responsible for the oversight, authorization, and coordination of hot work activities during ship repair operations, ensuring compliance with NAVSEA standard items, OSHA requirements, and NFPA 51B. This role serves as the central point of coordination for issuing and tracking hot work authorizations, mitigating hazardous conditions, resolving scheduling conflicts, and maintaining daily records to support the safe and compliant execution of all authorized hot work.

The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position will require frequent local travel.

Job Description:

  • Receive, review, and coordinate all hot work authorization requests to ensure they are complete, accurate, and compliant prior to the start of work.
  • Verify that all hot work authorization forms are properly completed in accordance with established safety and operational requirements.
  • Complete required hot work tracking documentation for each approved authorization and provide verification signatures prior to the start of hot work and upon completion to confirm proper closeout.
  • Coordinate with the Hot Work Supervisor to verify work readiness, required safety controls, and proper closeout of all hot work activities.
  • Conduct daily coordination meetings with project management/contractors/customers/ships force to identify and eliminate conflicts.
  • Communicate any hot work conflicts, safety concerns, or issues that may impact ship operations or production schedules to the supervising authority.
  • Participate in Fire Safety Council meetings to provide technical expertise and justification of requests to deviate from standard fire safety plans and hot work procedures.
  • Submit approved hot work authorization forms to the ship’s designated representative responsible for maintaining official hot work records.
  • Ensure revisions to approved hot work authorization forms are reviewed, processed, and approved prior to proceeding with work under revised conditions.
  • Prepare, implement, and verify lockout/tagout procedures and associated work authorization forms to ensure the safe isolation of energy sources prior to and during authorized work.
  • Complete, review, and execute required work authorization documentation, including lockout/tagout records, to ensure compliance with safety and operational requirements.
  • Prioritize the allocation of hot work authorizations each shift based on the integrated production schedule and operational requirements.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable hot work safety standards, shipboard fire prevention practices, and shipyard operational requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and at least 2 years of experience coordinating hot work, fire prevention, or safety related activities, preferably in a marine or shipyard environment; or have graduated from a registered apprenticeship program relevant to the trade.
  • Knowledge of hot work processes and requirements in accordance with NAVSEA standard items.
  • Knowledge of shipboard compartment layout to include understanding of adjacent compartments
  • Ability to review technical and safety documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple authorizations and priorities simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and energy control requirements in an industrial or shipyard environment.
  • Ability to accurately prepare, execute, and maintain lockout/tagout documentation and work authorization forms in accordance with established safety standards.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordination with supervisors, ship representatives, and work teams.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a safety-critical environment.
  • Proficiency with basic computer systems and documentation tracking tools.
