NSC Staffing is seeking experienced Marine Painters / Laggers for an upcoming project in Newport News, Virginia. This combined role supports shipboard and industrial preservation through painting, coating, insulation installation, and material removal/repair. Candidates should have strong marine or industrial experience and the ability to work safely in shipyard environments.
Position Overview
You will be responsible for performing coating applications, surface preparation, insulation installation, and repair on shipyard and industrial systems. Work will take place aboard ships, in confined spaces, on scaffolding, and in fast?paced industrial work environments.
Key Responsibilities
Marine Painting (Shortened Version):
- Perform surface preparation using hand and power tools.
- Apply coatings by brush, roll, or spray per job specifications.
- Mix paints and follow NAVSEA 009?32 standards.
- Measure and document DFT and environmental conditions.
- Maintain clean work areas and handle equipment properly.
- Read and follow job specifications with minimal supervision.
- Install insulation on piping systems, tanks, ducts, hulls, and machinery.
- Remove and repair calcium silicate, fiberglass, and temperature insulation.
- Apply finishing cements, cloth, adhesives, and templates accurately.
- Perform clean, high?quality installation and cutting techniques.
- Work with both hot and cold insulation systems.
Marine Painter (Condensed Levels 1-4):
- JP4-JP3: Advanced experience; able to mix/apply coatings, operate spray equipment, and work independently.
- JP2: Knowledge of SSPC prep standards; proficient with power tools and marine coatings.
- JP1: Must hold SSPC C7/C12/C13/C14 or Coast Guard pumping certification; basic preservation skills.
- 3-5 years of marine or industrial insulation experience.
- Knowledge of molded insulation, calcium silicate, fiberglass cloth, and finishing processes.
- Ability to work in confined or elevated shipboard environments.
- Aboard active/inactive naval or commercial vessels
- Confined spaces, heights, industrial areas
- Physically demanding (lifting, climbing, bending, kneeling)
