Purpose:

Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking 1st Class Shipfitters to support shipyard operations at our site in Norfolk, VA.

Job Description:
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form, i.e., blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Interpret and lay out blueprints, check and fit materials, tack weld of small assemblies, aluminum and steel foundations.
  • Interpret and lay out blueprints, check and fit materials, tack weld various decks, bulkheads, side shells.
  • Erect units and install structural items on ship ways.
  • Determine and apply joint and system tolerances.
  • Install structural outfit items such as doors, ladders, and foundations.
  • Complete lay outs using drawings and/or templates and/or by picking up and developing the geometry required from the lofting floor.
  • Physical assembly in prefabrication and erection on the building site of individual structural elements or prefabricated panels and three-dimensional sub-assemblies.
  • Tack and Fillet weld as needed with stick and semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Sequence assembly and fittings and safely use heating torches in plate heat straightening and shrinkage.
  • Preform all work adhering to industry codes, regulations and specifications.
  • Install simple systems without templates and blueprints.
  • Accomplish Bulkhead and deck inserting riveted joint repairs as needed.
  • Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons reports and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least seven (7) years of shipboard and/or shop Shipfitting experience.
  • Must be highly experienced with the use of tools and equipment including, but not limited to: come-a longs, hydraulic jacks, wedges, dogs, speed wrenches, planes, saws, chain falls, bandsaws, turn buckles, grinders, and sheers.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and structural drawings (blueprints).
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Shipfitting trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work internally confined spaces.
  • Must have a general knowledge of NAVSEA standards, ABS and ASME rules.
  • Must be fully qualified with the following:
    • Burning testing, local air testing, commercial and government air testing, tank hydrostatic testing, safe handling, use and storage of gasses, safe work practices, PPE usage, safe tank opening practices, lock out/tag out, confined space practices, respirator fit, safety harness, oil spill response, safe welding practices (29 CFR 1915), hot work, and Firewatch.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Must be able to work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Must be able to Tack Weld and some working knowledge with stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Must have advanced level experience with the use of cutting torches and heat torches in plate heat- straightening and shrinkage.
  • Must be able to provide instructions to other Shipfitters.
  • Must have some minor rigging abilities not normally requiring the use of overhead cranes.
Desired

Qualifications:

  • Prefer some technical training.
  • Prefer new Aircraft Carrier Construction experience.
  • Prefer new Submarine Construction experience.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
