CNC​/Conventional Machinist

Position Summary

The Inside Machinist operates in three sections:
Machining, Valves, and Pumps. Responsibilities and functional knowledge vary based on the designated section. All inside machinists are encouraged, but not required, to gain experience in any section other than their designated section.

This list represents the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a first‑class mechanic in the Inside Machine shop. A first‑class mechanic must demonstrate advanced knowledge of the skills, equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to perform tasks independently and train others. The mechanic also must strategically problem‑solve as appropriate.

• Machining Section
  • Operate lathes (able to hold tighter tolerances, thread internally and externally, and perform maintenance on lathes up to 24” and over 24”; also vertical turret lathes).
  • Operate milling machines (including vertical mills; perform basic maintenance).
  • Operate drill press and perform repairs.
  • Operate grinders (gate and surface grinders).
  • Operate flange facer and operate overhead crane (including rigging and obtaining a crane operator’s license).
  • Use machining tools: band saw, micrometer, and precision measuring tools.
  • Perform inline valve repairs, produce complex drawings, and assist with machine operations as needed.
• Pump Section
  • Know pump operations, mechanics of pump parts, and disassemble, clean, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and reassemble pumps.
  • Test pumps hydraulically and conduct final inspection.

• High School Diploma or GED (minimum).
• 2 to 4 years of relevant experience.
• Advanced understanding of lathe, drill press, and milling machine operation, blueprint reading, and project layout.
• Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to calculate units of measure, including fractions and decimals, and to measure using a scale and tape measure.
• Wearing applicable PPE (hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, steel-toed shoes, ear protection, respirator as needed).
• Ability to obtain a government access badge.

• 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with stress relieving, parts and repair, shaft straightening, and shaft overhaul (preferred but not required).

This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which determines wages and benefits.
