Inside Machine Shop – Inside Machinist J1–J4

Location:

Norfolk, Virginia. Position Type:

Guidelines for Inside Machinist (Levels J1–J4)

Qualifications for all levels include understanding of machine shop theory, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, layout techniques, blueprint reading, and use of precision measuring instruments. Knowledge of conventional and special-purpose machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, shapers, and required hand and power tools.

  • Journeyperson 4 (Inside Machinist)
    • Set up and operate conventional and special-purpose machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts and assemble machined parts into complete units.
    • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
    • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth/angle of cut.
    • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or media as required.
    • Verify conformance of finished work pieces to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
    • Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings.
    • Fit and assemble parts into complete assemblies using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools.
    • Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
    • Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment and test operation to ensure functionality and performance.
    • Apply machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques.
    • Read blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
    • Mark, shed, and designate dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Journeyperson 3 (Inside Machinist)
    • Set up and operate conventional and special-purpose machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts and assemble machined parts into complete units.

    • Show experience with turret lathe, boring mill, engine lathe, milling machine, drill press, grinders, and shop measuring tools.
    • Utilize inside machinist tools such as calipers, indicators, micrometers, and cutting tools.
