Director of the NICU/Neonatal Service Line
Provides leadership and direction for both inpatient and outpatient neonatal services. Performs overall operations, ensuring the safety and well‑being of all patients on a twenty‑four‑hour basis. Works in collaboration with the NICU, NNP/PA program, Neonatal Breastfeeding Medicine, Fetal Diagnostic Center, and Neonatal Follow‑up Clinic. Reports to the Vice President of Patient Care Services.
Responsibilities- Implement evidence‑based nursing practices to achieve operational excellence.
- Facilitate respectful and productive interdisciplinary collaborations and promote a culture of customer‑oriented services.
- Coordinate staff educational opportunities and certification processes.
- Develop, implement, and communicate nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards and comply with state and federal regulations.
- Ensure proper staffing, scheduling, training, development, and performance evaluation of nurses and staff.
- Initiate corrective action when performance does not meet expectations.
- Lead inpatient and outpatient neonatal services, including the Neonatal Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic, NNP/PA program, Neonatal Consults for the Fetal Diagnostic Center, and Neonatal Follow‑up Clinic.
- Develop processes to promote quality of service, grow service lines, and maintain budgetary compliance.
- Ensure each nurse is properly certified and adheres to established standards of care.
- Collaborate with physicians in the treatment of patients.
- Review daily reports to monitor and respond to issues promptly.
- Develop and recommend annual budgets for assigned areas.
- Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve methods and productivity while maintaining high‑quality patient care.
- Mentor and coach managers and nursing staff.
- Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Infection Control, Quality) to enhance safety and process improvement.
- Monitor operations and quality standards to assure compliance with governmental regulations and accrediting agencies.
- Lead, manage, coach, and train a team or department, providing guidance, support, and mentorship.
- Oversee recruitment, hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions up to termination.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or a valid Compact State license.
- Master’s degree in Nursing; may be substituted with a Master’s in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field provided the candidate also possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Candidates enrolled in a Master’s program will be considered, provided completion occurs within one year.
- Minimum of five years of progressive nursing leadership experience in a collaborative, team‑development setting.
- Professional knowledge of theory, practice, and administration relevant to the responsibilities.
- Analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee work of subordinates.
Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as excessive noise, dust, or extreme temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to patient care activities can be expected.
