Position Summary:
The Preoperative & Recovery Nurse (RN) plays a vital dual-role in the care of patients undergoing vascular, neuro-interventional, and interventional radiology procedures at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. This nurse provides comprehensive pre-procedure and post-procedure care, ensuring safe, high-quality outcomes through thorough assessments, clinical preparation, vigilant recovery monitoring, and patient education.

Rotating shifts within unit hours of 0600 to 2100, Monday through Friday - Call Requirement:
One weekend every 7–8 weeks, 0730–1500
Key Responsibilities :
Preoperative Duties:
- Perform complete preoperative assessments including vital signs, medication review, allergy documentation, and verification of procedural readiness.
- Initiate and manage IV access; administer ordered pre-op medications and fluids.
- Ensure all labs, imaging, and documentation are reviewed and cleared prior to procedures.
- Provide pre-procedure education to patients and families, explaining sedation, expectations, and discharge planning.
- Verify informed consent, fasting status, and NPO compliance.
- Collaborate with radiology, anesthesia, and surgical teams to streamline patient care and throughput.
- Receive post-procedural patients and perform focused recovery assessments including vital signs, neuro checks, and site monitoring.
- Monitor for complications such as bleeding, hemodynamic instability, or adverse reactions to sedation.
- Manage pain, nausea, and other immediate recovery needs with physician-directed interventions.
- Provide discharge instructions and education tailored to the patient’s procedure and condition.
- Document all recovery findings and nursing care in EPIC.
- Facilitate safe and timely discharge or admission based on patient status.
Required:
- Current RN license in the state of Virginia
- BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA-approved)
- At least 1 year of experience in pre-op, PACU, ICU, ED, or procedural recovery nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Experience in Interventional Radiology or procedural prep/recovery
- Moderate sedation certification
- EPIC EMR proficiency
