Overview

Sentara Heart Hospital located on the campus of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA is hiring a Registered Nurse for the Cardiac ICU (CICU). The RN is responsible for performing a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. Standards of practice include assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, teaching and health promotion, and evaluation.

Standards of professional performance include ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence‑based practice / nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization and environmental health. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.

Location & Shift

City:
Norfolk, VA. Shift: Weekend Nights, multiple shifts available.

Cardiac ICU Details
  • 10 beds on the 2nd floor.
  • Patient population: cardiac non‑surgical cases, pulmonary hypertension, heart attack, heart failure, sepsis, shock, and other ICU‑level care needs.
  • CICU nurses are part of the Medical Response Team for the hospital.
Education
  • Associate’s Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing – BSN or MSN (Preferred)
Certification/Licensure
  • Virginia RN License (Virginia or Compact/Multi‑State Eligible)
  • All Direct Care RNs required to have BLS within 90 days of hire.
  • Critical Care/IMCU ACLS within 1 year of hire.
Experience
  • ICU experience or 1 year of Intermediate/Stepdown care with cardiac knowledge.
  • Alternatively, 2 years of Medical/Surgical, PCU, or ED experience (1 year for ED).
Nurse Transition to Practice Program

Sentara’s 12‑week Nurse Transition to Practice program supports nurses new to critical care through hands‑on training, professional development, and mentorship. The program includes classroom learning, preceptor‑led unit orientation, eight sessions with live simulations, case studies, and problem‑based learning. Key topics: patient assessment, respiratory and cardiac care, vasoactive medications, hemodynamics, invasive monitoring, post‑op care, sedation, and effective communication with providers and families.
