Overview

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Full Time
- Ultrasound-Guided IV Nurse

Hours:

7am-7pm 36 hours a week

  • Perform ultrasound-guided peripheral IV catheter insertion for patients with difficult vascular access.
  • Assess and recommend appropriate vascular access devices based on patient needs and therapy requirements.
  • Utilize aseptic technique and infection prevention practices during all procedures.
  • Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot vascular access devices.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Provide education and competency training related to vascular access and ultrasound-guided IV insertion.
  • Document procedures, assessments, and patient outcomes accurately and timely.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to vascular access and infusion therapy.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform ultrasound-guided peripheral IV catheter insertion for patients with difficult vascular access.
  • Assess and recommend appropriate vascular access devices based on patient needs and therapy requirements.
  • Utilize aseptic technique and infection prevention practices during all procedures.
  • Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot vascular access devices.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Provide education and competency training related to vascular access and ultrasound-guided IV insertion.
  • Document procedures, assessments, and patient outcomes accurately and timely.

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
Job Requirements Education
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Certifications
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent acute care nursing experience required.
  • Experience with peripheral IV insertion
  • Previous experience using ultrasound technology for vascular access strongly preferred.
  • Experience in critical care, emergency services, IV therapy, or vascular access teams preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (USGPIV) insertion.
  • Knowledge of vascular anatomy, infection prevention, and infusion therapy standards.
  • Ability to assess patients with difficult vascular access and determine appropriate access devices.
  • Skilled in insertion, maintenance, and troubleshooting of peripheral IVs, midlines, and PICC lines as applicable.
  • Ability to recognize and manage complications related to vascular access.
  • Strong critical thinking, assessment, and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to educate patients, families, and healthcare staff regarding vascular access procedures and care.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) documentation.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand movements and maintain fine motor skills required for vascular access procedures.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in Vascular Access (VA-BC).
  • Experience educating staff and providing competency validation related to vascular access procedures.
