SOUTH BAY SANDBLASTING & TANK CLEANING, INC., a shipyard‑related subcontractor located in Norfolk, VA, is hiring an Environmental Health and Safety Technician.
Job Summary
We are seeking an EH&S Technician who is committed to safety and capable of performing a variety of duties, including ship inspections, training, hazardous waste coordination, sample collection, and more. The candidate must be willing to work in confined spaces, long hours, weekends, and must be based in Norfolk, VA (no relocation).
- Perform various physical duties as assigned
- Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Conduct ship inspections
- Correct discrepancies
- Provide training
- Coordinate hazardous waste removal and shipyard hazardous‑material compliance
- Maintain recordkeeping
- Collect samples
- Conduct industrial hygiene surveys
- Investigate accidents
- Provide safety data sheets
- Perform specialized tasks that may require on‑the‑job training
- Implement and follow the company’s safety, quality, and environmental policies
- Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
- Time‑management skills; works with minimal supervision
- Attentive to detail and safety
- Receives and follows instructions; communicates effectively with co‑workers
- Minimum of two years of EH&S experience
- Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Knowledgeable in OSHA Maritime Standards
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- High school diploma or GED, B.A., technical/vocational trade school, or apprenticeship
- Certified HAZWOPER and 10‑hour OSHA Maritime Safety
Work is conducted indoors and outdoors, frequently exposed to prevailing weather conditions. Work may involve fumes, chemicals, heat, noise, and dust. The position requires frequent climbing of inclined stairways and vertical surfaces, standing and walking for long periods, and working in a dynamic, fast‑paced outdoor setting. The individual must be able to stand and walk for long periods and must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed.
