Armed Security Officer

Sentara Health is hiring an Armed Security Officer for Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA. This is a part‑time position with a daytime shift schedule.

• 7:00 am – 3:00 pm (8‑hour shifts)
• 3 days per week (alternate days, e.g., Mon‑Wed‑Fri or Tue‑Thu‑Sat)

The Armed Security Officer provides a physically safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and employees at Sentara Hospitals and free‑standing emergency departments.

• Exercise discretion regarding the use of firearms, deploying the weapon only in extreme situations after all non‑violent options are exhausted.
• Monitor Concealed Weapon Detection System(s) at division entrances, inform visitors/patients that weapons are not allowed, and secure weapons for safekeeping during the visit.
• Patrol campus and monitor activity in and around buildings and grounds, responding appropriately to routine and emergency situations.
• Perform camera surveillance, maintain department logs and records, use computer skills for daily documentation, and conduct security investigations.
• Evaluate situations and take appropriate steps for timely professional resolution.

To bolster safety and security:

• Fit for Duty assessment to ensure minimum fitness standards.
• Psychological Evaluation and Assessment conducted by a Sentara‑selected service provider.
• Virginia DCJS – Armed Officer Certificate obtained within 90 days of hire.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)

• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (Required)
• Virginia DCJS – Armed Officer Certificate within 90 days of hire (Required)
• Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification by IAHSS within 90 days of hire (Required)

• One year of security experience (Required)
• Former military or law‑enforcement experience (Preferred)

Located in Norfolk, VA, Sentara Leigh Hospital is a 274‑bed acute care facility that opened in 1903 and relocated in 1977. The hospital includes a dedicated Orthopedic Hospital, a Primary Stroke Center, a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, and specialty programs such as orthopedic and spine care, heart, vascular, maternity, and general surgery. It also hosts the region’s only 24‑hour hyperbaric oxygen program.
