Key Responsibilities- Provide security services for Old Dominion University.
- Monitor main and satellite campus grounds to ensure staff, students, and visitors are safe.
- Make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis.
- Identify and assist with the investigation of minor or suspicious matters.
- Basic familiarity with personal computers to include Microsoft Office, Outlook, etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions to complete assigned tasks and reports.
- Ability to perform essential physical requirements which include standing and/or walking for extended periods.
- Ability to perform required tasks during periods of inclement weather.
- Ability to maintain a neat and clean appearance/uniform and report for duty on time.
- Ability to provide security services which includes working inside and outside of building during various hours of the day.
- Special licenses, registration or certification:
- Valid driver's license and insurable record.
- Ability to obtain the DCJS CSO Campus Security Officer Certification within one year of employment.
- Education or training: High school diploma or GED.
- Level and type of experience: Some experience in a security position or in a related role such as loss‑prevention, facilities monitoring, or other duties helping to maintain safety and order.
- Additional Considerations: Some experience and training as a Campus Security Officer or Security Officer.
- University Police Department employees are considered essential personnel for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during these conditions.
- Must work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and any mandatory special events. Some overtime will be required based on the department’s needs.
- This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint‑based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate.
- Hourly employees are restricted to working 29 hours per week on average or 1500 hours in total in the May 1 – April 30 period. This position does not have health insurance, retirement, or leave.
- The current vacancies are primarily for the Tri‑Cities/VMASC & VA Beach Higher Education Center locations. These locations have a rotating schedule which includes some weekends.
Hourly rate: $15.49 per hour. Salary non‑negotiable.
