Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.
The college had 3,399 graduates in , 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled 's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The Tidewater Community College Department of Police & Public Safety supports the educational mission of the college by administering security, safety, and emergency preparedness programs that comply with state and federal mandates and provide resources to provide services which ensure safe, working and learning environments for all employees and members of the college community.
The Chief Of Police will plan, develop, organize, actuate, direct and manage law enforcement programs that will ensure the (1) protection of college property and facilities, (2) detection and prevention of criminal activity, (3) enforcement of traffic and parking rules and regulations, (4) enforcement of rules and regulations pertaining to the protection and safety of faculty, staff, students, visitors and the general public.
The Police Chief is responsible for direction, planning, organization, staffing, and control of patrol officers, security officers and other subordinates within the Department of Police & Public Safety (sworn and non-sworn). This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check and physical will be required of the final candidate. Considered "essential personnel" for emergency conditions and inclement weather and expected to report to duty during those conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent skills in computers, related word processing, and spreadsheet software
- Ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
- Demonstrated ability to comprehend and interpret written instructions and work independently to solve problems involving many variables.
- Strong working knowledge of investigative techniques and practices. Considerable knowledge of Virginia and applicable federal laws. Considerable working knowledge of administrative functions in areas of policy and police supervision.
- Thorough knowledge of the requirements and techniques of law enforcement and crisis management, including crime prevention, investigation, suspect apprehension, disaster management and reporting, particularly as they relate to campus safety, security and emergency crisis preparedness
- Considerable knowledge of leadership principles and management techniques.
- Must demonstrate high moral character.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks
- Ability to plan, organize and complete work within prescribed deadlines
- Be able to carry equipment and cover a large expanse of buildings and grounds with numerous steps, on foot
- Ability to work effectively with others to achieve goals and resolve problems, with an emphasis on customer service
- Certification as a police officer as mandated by a state department of Criminal Justice Services or police certifying body. Virginia DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services) LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) Certification will be required within one year of hiring.
