Description
Position Location: Norfolk, VA
Summary: Performs routine mechanical work on U.S. Navy shore facilities, waterborne vessels, surface ships and/or submarines. Tasks will be related to inspections, repairs, modernization and/or alterations.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Proficient in the use of precision measurement equipment including scales, vernier calipers.
- Perform disconnects and connections of mechanical joints.
- Removes and installs various equipment using sound engineering practices.
- Performing duties as Firewatch.
- Assists with cleaning up work area.
- Employees may be required to travel for work to other locations
Language Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis.
Education/Experience:
- Must have completed a formal related course of study in trade through either a community college, technical or trade school, military training, formal company training program or an apprentice program.
- Must have 1-5 years of verifiable experience as a mechanic in an industrial environment (i.e., shipbuilding, ship repair or nuclear power plants).
Equipment:
- General Hand Tools
- Torque Wenches
- Precision Measuring Instruments
- Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions and manuals.
- Must possess working knowledge of shipboard operating requirements.
- and understand material safety data sheets (MDS).
- Able to follow safety procedures.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required on a regular basis to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and/or hear. Frequently the employee is required to carry objects that might weigh up to 50 pounds.
