What You’ll Be Doing
As a Journeyman Welder, you’ll perform welding work to repair, modify, and install piping, structures, foundations, and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic, and water systems. You’ll work from technical drawings and follow strict safety and quality standards in demanding environments.
Typical duties include:
- Perform welding using SMAW, FCAW (automatic), and GTAW
- Repair, modify, and install shipboard pipes, structures, and mechanical components
- Select proper filler materials, joint designs, and heat ranges per work instructions
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and welding symbols
- Set up and operate welding equipment, hand tools, and grinding containments
- Fabricate and install fixtures and jigs needed for proper weld alignment
- Support inspections, testing, and quality checks as required
- Maintain good housekeeping and follow all safety procedures
- Work with limited supervision and take ownership of your work
Required:
- Minimum 6 years of verifiable welding experience in heavy industrial, shipyard, or fabrication environments
- Strong experience with SMAW, FCAW (automatic), and GTAW
- Ability to read blueprints and technical work documents
- OSHA 10 (OSHA 30 preferred)
- High School Diploma or GED
- U.S. Citizen with an active or eligible Secret security clearance
- Ability to obtain government base access
- Willingness to work overtime and travel as needed
- Completion of a formal welding program (apprenticeship, trade school, military, or company training)
- Shipyard or repair environment experience
- Experience qualifying to workmanship or inspection standards
- Familiarity with automated welding processes
This position is primarily shop and shipyard-based and may include:
- Working indoors and occasionally outdoors
- Confined spaces, elevated platforms, or overhead work
- Exposure to heat, cold, noise, fumes, sparks, and dust
- Heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing for long periods
- Mandatory use of PPE (hearing, eye, skin, and respiratory protection)
